Landscapes for the People

The story and photography of George Alexander Grant, first staff, and later first chief photographer of the National Park Service (1922, 1929-54). It provides long overdue recognition to Grant for his valuable contributions to the visual history of the national parks - including the parks of the Yellowstone Ecosystem, during an era of dramatic growth in the 1930s-50s. Grant's work supported park interpretation initiatives and complemented the objectives of the Roosevelt Administration to encourage all Americans to support and visit their national parks. Through his photography, Grant also documented the work of the New Deal era Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) at Grand Teton National Park and elsewhere in the park system. Grant's black-and-white photographs were seen by millions of people, appearing in newspapers, books, and magazines; and in museum exhibits and park documents; yet he was virtually unknown outside the agency as nearly all of his published photographs were credited, simply, "National Park Service".
Landscapes for the People: George Alexander Grant, First Chief Photographer of the National Park Service [The University of Georgia Press, 2015]. The book was recipient of the American Library Association's INDIEFAB Gold Medal as the most outstanding photography book published in 2015 by an academic or independent press., and has been featured in National Parks Magazine, Outdoor Photographer Magazine, and Arizona Highways Magazine.
